Winter Mini-Fest 2010

On February 27th the Metal Boat Society held a Mini-Fest on Whidbey Island at Nichols Diversified Industries hosted by the owner Justin Nichols.

We met at his shop at 10:00a.m. and looked at the boats in progress and then Justin talked about his building process. The preferred process is building the hull upside down from a computer designed boat plan with a detailed cutting file developed for all parts. The cutting file is given to a subcontractor that cuts the parts on a computer driven router table, from sheet stock and then the parts are delivered to the shop. He also filled us in on some of work in progress on the boats in the shop.

After this we moved to nearby Langley Marina where several Nichols built boats were moored. We toured these boats and then enjoyed a lunch of barbequed Nichols Burgers hosted by Justin.

Thanks a million Justin and crew. We all learned a lot and had a great time.
